Yes - getting a last minute permit to backpack in Santa Cruz is possible.
Do you plan out your camping trips 6 months in advance? Neither do I…
As a non-planner, I find the lottery system for camping to be quite repulsive. First-come-first-serve options are my M.O.
If you feel similarly, then Castle Rock Creek State Park in Santa Cruz is for you.
There are 20 first-come-first-serve campsites in Castle Rock Trail Camp - just a 2.5 mile hike from the Castle Rock Parking lot.
Go to the ranger station at the parking lot - they’ll issue you a $15 permit (includes parking).
The best part is there are almost always open camp sites.
Ok, but where is Castle Rock State Park?
Castle Rock is along the crest of the Santa Cruz mountains, overlooking Monterey Bay.
It’s also the starting point for the popular Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail which passes through Big Basin (California’s 1st State Park) and ends at Waddle Beach.
Be sure to Hydrate
There is no drinking water available at Castle Rock Creek Camp.
That means you have to pack all your water in (not recommended) or bring a water filter (we use this one) and fill up at San Lorenzo river, a short hike down from camp.
Other Campsite Info
Fires are only allowed outside of “fire-season” - I know it’s tempting to start one but don’t do it!
Find a tree to perch up to watch the sunset instead :)
Don’t forget bug spray.
Big Basin Redwoods
Make sure to stop by Big Basin to see the giant redwoods - it’s a quick (and beautiful) drive from Castle Rock and worth fighting through the crowds.
Sunny Cove Beach Santa Cruz
Taking a dip in the ocean after hiking feels SO nice!
Sunny Cove is a lovely locals beach in Santa Cruz and I’d highly recommend it.
Make sure to park in a permit-free zone!
Don’t forget about the Santa Cruz Board Walk
There’s something so nostalgic about the boardwalk. Make sure to ride a few rides before heading back home :)
Happy camping!
